Honeymoons are usual the kind of trips that take more planning and we are more excited about. We want everything to be perfect, planned to detail and delicately handled so that nothing goes wrong last minute.
One of the elements that we normally devote more time to is picking out a destination. Some of the aspects we consider when choosing our destination is that it is some place exotic, that there is a beach so that we can relax for a few days, possibly combined with cultural activities, or that it has a nice weather. But it is not always easy to make a decision.
Thus, here you have 5 perfect destinations for a honeymoon that might help you make up your mind.
1. The Maldives
The Maldives are a paradise in and out of water. This is probably one of the most popular dream destinations among brides and grooms everywhere, although sometimes people get cold feet about it for its high cost.
Private islands surrounded by water with a range of blue that looks almost unreal, white-sand beaches where you’ll find the highest form of relaxation and some beach villas and houseboats that will make your trip an unforgettable experience. All this combined with spectacular coral reefs, perfect to practise scuba-diving and snorkelling.
The Maldives are always a safe bet when travelling around.
And why not? Maybe you want to recreate your wedding by getting married again, this time at the beach.

Reference rates for a honeymoon in the Maldives:
- Plane tickets Spain-Malé (Maldives): 700 euros approx. In Mejorvuelo there have been occasional deals for 400 euros.
Resorts: ranging from 150 euros to whatever you can or want to imagine.
- In general, if you want an upscale/midscale all-inclusive resort, you must save 500 euros/night per room, combining Water Villas and Beach Bungalows (for instance, 4 nights in a Water Villa and 3 in a Beach Bungalow).
- Transfers: seaplane from Malé to island of choice: Approximately 370 euros per person to and back.
- Speedboat from Malé to island of choice: Approximately 230 euros per person to and back.
We recommend that if you opt for this idyllic destination, you book everything separately, in order to save up some money. You can purchase the plane tickets yourself and then contact a wholesaler in the Maldives (that way you’ll find more affordable prices for resorts, which normally include transfers). In this particular case, forget about the usual hotel search engines in general, for prices tend to go up 40% compared to travel agencies.
Thailand is one of the first countries that comes to mind when we think about the perfect honeymoon. For Thailand has everything you could possibly ask for in a trip.
There you’ll find modern cities such as Bangkok, where you can experience the combination of temples, culture and shopping in some of the most contemporary shopping centres in the country. Not to mention the fact that here you will be able to savour the delicious Thai cuisine in a plethora of restaurants, from the most affordable to the most chic.
You can also visit the historical parks of Ayuthaya or Sukothai, where you can get lost in the ruins Indiana Jones-style.
To experience nature in its purest form, you can go north, starting in Chiang Mai, from where you can immerse yourself into the jungle and follow the most amazing trekking routes ever, combining adventure with visits to local ethnic groups.
And there is nothing better than to end your trip to Thailand in one of its beaches, the closest thing to paradise you’ll find in Asia.
The Krabi province is just one example of the many options you can choose from to rest for a few days, sheltered by the shadow of the palm trees opposite turquoise blue waters.
Reference rates for a honeymoon in Thailand (the legal tender is the Thai baht):
- Plane tickets Spain-Bangkok: 500 euros approx.
- Hotels: 50 euros approx. (upscale/midscale hotels).
- Meals: 5 euros approx. (meal in a local restaurant, plus drinks).
3. Safari in Kenia and Tanzania
Another popular option among just-married couples for their honeymoon is going on a Safari around Kenia and Tanzania, a combination of countries that will give you an insight into the wildest fauna surrounded by the most beautiful form of nature.
In Africa, besides nature, you’ll be able to contemplate one of the most amazing skies you’ll ever look at. There is no doubt that the best way to end your safari is to lay down in a hammock staring at the thousands of stars in the sky with the sounds of the savannah in the background.
Some of the options you can add to your safari in Kenia and Tanzania, which, as it turns out, is a very common combo, is visiting Zanzibar or the Seychelles. Finding yourself surrounded by idyllic beaches will be the cherry on top for your honeymoon.

For this trip we recommend that you go for a travel agency that can arrange the whole trip for you. Planning the trip on your own is not exactly the fastest or most affordable option, especially if you don’t know the country and don’t have all the necessary information, the reason being that transport in this part of Africa does not exactly excel in organisation or neatness.
Through an agency, a 15-day safari around Kenia and Tanzania can cost you approximately 3,500-4000 euros per person.
Bali, also known as the Island of Gods, is one of those places in the world that looks like it has been taken out of a magazine or catalogue in an exotic travel agency.
It is true that some tourist hotspots have lost a bit of the charm they had a few years back, when mass tourism was not a thing yet, but if you put some distance and avoid these areas, you’ll discover an island where smiles are a permanent accessory.
Unreal green rice fields, fairytale-like temples, delicious cuisine –rich in flavours–, and mind-blowing landscapes will be you travelling companions.
And if you want your honeymoon to be unique, do not forget to book a private villa in the middle of a rice field –very popular in Bali–, where you’ll get to enjoy nature and an incomparable service as a special supplement to your honeymoon in the Island of Gods.
But truth be told, if what you are after is idyllic beaches, do not stay in Bali, because you won’t find any. Still, you can always go to Lombok, which is not far away, and lay down in one of the three Gilis, a small group of islands that can be reached by boat and that will provide you with everything you are looking for in a beach that is catalogue material.
Reference rates for a honeymoon in Bali:
- Plane tickets Spain-Bali: 700 euros approx. (we recommend that you also look for flights Spain/Jakarta, which are usually a lot cheaper, and then fly to Denpasar, in Bali, with a low cost airline).
- Hotels: 60 euros approx. (upscale-midscale hotels).
- Meals: 6 euros approx. (meal in a local restaurant, plus drinks).
- Car/driver to move around the island: 40 euros a day, approximately, all included.
Japan is probably the least popular destination among the 5 we have selected as the perfect honeymoon trips, although not for that less interesting.
Japan offers such a wide range of possibilities that it would deserve to be considered as the winning destination for your honeymoon plans.
Arriving in Japan is landing in a different world. Cities such as Tokyo seem to be crawling out of a future where everything is possible and tradition and modernity blend in a way that is difficult to beat by any other destination.
If we are looking for a quieter space that excels in authenticity, you have to visit Kyoto, the kind of city where you’ll find the most genuine side of Japan.
Another must in a trip to Japan is Miyajima, where we recommend to spend the night so that you can enjoy the site empty of tourists late in the afternoon and first thing in the morning.
Miyajima might be the perfect place to book a ryokan –the traditional Japanese form of accommodation– to spend the night, which will be the icing on the cake for your honeymoon.
And if your idea of a honeymoon consists of ending your trip in a more secluded area, you can consider going to Shirakawa-go, a little village in the Japanese Alps, whose unique surroundings will be the best environment to celebrate your union in matrimony.
Reference rates for a honeymoon in Japan (the legal tender is the Japanese yen):
- Plane tickets Spain-Tokyo: 650 euros approx.
- Hotels: 50 euros approx. (upscale-midscale hotels).
- Meals: 10 euros approx. (meal in a local restaurant, plus drinks).
- JRP for 7, 14 or 21 days: 210 euros, 336 euros or 430 euros respectively.
